Urbana Freemo Open

Urbana Freemo Open is part of a larger train show at the Lincoln Square Mall in Urbana IL at the end of March. Lincoln Square is one of those rare malls that has a good selection of stores, many of them locally-owned, rather than just clothing. The Train Show fills the mall with model trains – many of them for sale, others to see operating or run yourself. The event runs Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, a large section is taken up by the Saturday Market which ends at noon, in the past leaving a large hole for the rest of the train show.

The first Urbana Freemo Open was organized in 2023 by IRC and local narrow gauge modeler Mike Lehman. Saturday Morning, FreeMo modules are brought to the mall and staged off to the side. Around noon, the entire market is taken down and track is set up in its place. Note we call this an Open rather than a Meet – the track plan will be decided as modules arrive and may grow during the course of the event as more track is added.

There is plenty of space after the market leaves. Are you ready to build the UFO?
