History

This Page in Progress

The story of IRC starts in 1912, when a professional organization was founded at the university originally known as the Railroad Club. In the 1960's the Illini Railroad Club was known for chartering trains and owning its own equipment. As time went on, a model train club was started and merged into IRC. Along with photography, there was an O scale layout which was later replaced with an HO scale room. Around the time of covid, IRC started a FreeMo setup, where interchangeable modules can be worked on individually and displayed at train shows. There is more history to be added here over time, both as it is written and as it is written.
