FreeMo is a standard that allows a model railroad to be created from individual pieces that can be worked on and moved around on their own, and assembled into whatever arrangement is desired. The joining surfaces of the modules are compatible with each other, with freedom for what happens in the middle.
At IRC, building modular, lets us choose the track plan for every operating session, so we always have variety in limited space. It lets us bring the modules to events, even outside, to show people the hobby. It lets us flip the railroad upside down to work on the wiring. And on occasion we join our modules with others from around the country, setting up larger routes than would fit in a basement, all while meeting new people and learning from each other's designs.
As a university club, new students join and old students graduate at a fast rate. This implies a continuous teaching process, which is supported by the modular system. If they want, they can learn how to build their own section of track and there'll be a place for it.
There are three yearly FreeMo meets in East Central Illinoi:
We hope to see you there!
